Feds Investigate Land Rover Driveshaft Complaints, PT Cruiser Glass Problem
Date posted: 04-10-2007
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on its Web site that it has opened a preliminary investigation into complaints of driveshaft failures on some Land Rover Range Rover models from 2002-'04. At the same time, NHTSA says Chrysler Group will begin recalling 38,500 PT Cruisers next month to replace rear-quarter glass with defective fasteners.
The U.S. auto safety regulator said if the rear-quarter glass on the PT Cruiser separates while driving, it could strike another vehicle or injure pedestrians. The recall covers PT Cruisers built between May and September 2005. The agency says owners may contact DaimlerChrysler for more information at (800) 853-1403.
NHTSA said in regard to the preliminary Land Rover investigation that it has received 38 complaints about front driveshaft and front axle differential failures, many of which caused the vehicle to stop moving. In about half the reports, the vehicle was traveling faster than 40 mph. No crashes or injuries have been reported. The agency said an estimated 33,000 vehicles could be affected.
What this means to you: If you own the aforementioned vehicles, better have them checked out at your dealership.
